I only tenuously understand this so feel free to ignore the question if it's too asinine but:

Why can't you do the same to subtract x4 from x7 to get x3?

Or for hexadecimal: multiplying by 0x10 (16) or by 2, 4 or 8.
Binary 4x is left shift by 2, rather than 2x which is by one.
Adding or subtracting in 2's compliment space is the same operation for the bits of the word.
