Ask HN: How can AI improve the US hiring process?
If the benefit of AI is in analyzing and responding to queries, such as comparing an applicant to desired credentials, will it ever improve the current landscape of the US hiring process?
I ask this based on personal experience, specifically relating to an application engagement with a global insurance broker, Hub. Without question, my knowledge, skills, and abilities matched the parameters at a high level. The role of a Proposal Specialist is rather unique and I worked for several years at a competitor, Marsh. My salary expectations were a match for their budget as well.
The phone screen with the internal recruiter went stellar, to the point of him saying “I’m going to walk this down the hallway to the Chief of Sales to further the process.” A week later and the ghosting is complete.
Is it because I have a misdemeanor within the past year? Is it because I’ve been out of the workforce since late 2022? Is it outright age discrimination?
If AI was allowed to make the decision, I have no doubt my candidacy would have been advanced - in this scenario, I’m truly curious if there is a future where such systems may functionally reduce human bias in positive ways.
