Terabytes Encoded Within a Millimeter-Sized Crystal

Original title "Immense Data Storage: Envisioning Terabytes Encoded Within a Millimeter-Sized Crystal"

Nowhere in the story does it actually say they encoded 1 TB of data. It's only referring to the implied potential density.

"Envisioning Terabytes Encoded Within a Millimeter-Sized Crystal" because, so far, they have only shown that you can charge and measure a crystal structure with light. What they did not, however, provide any measurements on, is if the resulting excited crystal state is stable and for how long. But that would have been, in my opinion, the key differentiator how this could be more useful than phosphorescence, which is also optical charging and can be measured optically, but is always only temporary.

There's quite a lot of fluff in the article, but here's the crux of it:

> By integrating lightweight ion concentrations from rare earth elements into a specifically designed crystal matrix, they formulated a powerful memory storage technique. Using praseodymium doped in an yttrium oxide crystal, this material would not only serve as the basis for capturing data but also remain flexible across a spectrum of optical properties thereafter.

> Activation of this innovative memory technology occurs through the application of ultraviolet lasers, which stimulate the rare earth ions, leading to the release of electrons that subsequently become trapped within the crystal defects. These defects are intrinsic to the crystalline structure and are defined by the absence of atoms—gaps where a single oxygen atom might typically exist. The research demonstrated how these vacant sites can be engineered with precision to represent binary values, effectively transforming them into high-density memory storage units.

Encoding data in crystals is deliciously sci fi

why not? all matter is photo reactive, and will hold a charge, and has some magnetic susceptibility and conduction of heat and electricty so the potential number of materials for use in solar pv, battery storage, super conduction and memory is essentialy infinite, and we only need 4

odds are very good that we will find what we are looking for

Hype maybe, but roads seem clear ahead for a step change revolution in storage, and I personally think that's much more exciting than "AI". I mean, what if you really can put the Internet and more onto a crystal micro SD card for pennies a shot?
