Excel/Calc is like an IDE for CSV. Much easier for the eye to spot errors if data is aligned. A text editor won't show you if you're missing column data for some row.

I want my data in a table. LibreOffice does exactly what I want, a text editor doesn't. So, I use LibreOffice.

There are text editors that will. I'm not disagreeing, I'm just curious about the specific differences. Anyway, happy editing!

Now hang on: Emacs isn't just "a text editor", it's a Lisp environment which just so happens to have the best text editor as front-end.

Yeah, not sure which is more bloated, Emacs or LibreOffice :-)

C-c C-a is quicker, as is C-c C-u to unalign them again.

There are text editors that operate fine on columns. IIRC Emacs and Vim do to an extent.
