One of the problems is that authoritarian countries already have access to this technology. All the open sharing of research and weights and free trade that allowed access to GPUs already happened. What now? Isn’t it inevitable that those authoritarian countries will use these technologies to control their citizens, improve their military tech, and undermine democratic countries?

I think the current US administration significantly undermines the framing of democracy versus authoritarianism. As much as Dario may want to push alternative narratives, most AI practitioners—who have no financial ties to OpenAI or Anthropic—likely view this as an attempt to squash competition from open weight models.

How does the US administration undermine the framing of democracy versus authoritarianism? They were democratically elected. Their actions have at least a simple majority of support among voters according to polls. The US still has all the fundamentals of a democracy such as free speech, and strong individual rights in the first and second and other amendments. People aren’t getting tossed out of windows or sent to labor camps or controlled by social credit scores. In my opinion, there is no equivalency between America (whether under Biden or Trump) and an authoritarian regime like in Russia or China.
