I'm from the United Kingdom and we can visit Japan for 6 months. I should start planning.

Only 3 months by default. You have to specially ask for permission to stay 6 months (and they absolutely won't allow you to hop in and out of the country to "reset" the counter).

I could also stay for one day, unless I want to stay for 6 months. The key point is were are talking about the maximum duration.
