Ask HN: I Built an API-First Platform for Spreadsheets (Excel and Google Sheets)

Hey HN! I'm a backend engineer who loves building APIs. I've always been frustrated by how hard it is to work with spreadsheets programmatically. Tools like SheetDB exist, but they’re clunky, outdated, and lack the flexibility developers need today.

I decided to build a modern platform for spreadsheets. It lets you:

- Read/write data to Google Sheets, Excel, or CSVs easily. - Run Excel formulas via API for automation or analytics. - Integrate with Zapier, Airtable, or Bubble (no code!). - Perform advanced data manipulation (e.g., filters, sorting, pivots).

We're launching with an MVP focused on developers and no-code users who want a simple, fast way to work with spreadsheets in their apps. If this sounds interesting, subscribe to my newsletter to follow our progress or sign up for early access.

Happy to answer any questions or hear feedback from the community!

What does "Run Excel formulas via API for automation or analytics" do that isn't already done by the fact the data is in Google Sheets/other?

Great question! Sheeting works like PDF.co but for spreadsheets. It turns Google Sheets and Excel into an API so you can automate tasks like running formulas, extracting data, and syncing sheets programmatically—no manual effort needed.

Instead of opening files, you can use them directly in your apps or workflows via API or integrations with tools like Zapier and Bubble. It's all about automation and simplifying complex spreadsheet tasks.

Hope that helps clarify things!

I wouldn't assume anyone knows what PDF.co is. Personally, I've never heard of it and I imagine I'm not alone here.

I can't see your content, it's redirecting to /subscribe.

Thanks for pointing that out! Right now, this is just a newsletter to validate the idea and see if there’s demand for such a tool. If you like the concept, subscribing would really help me understand if this is something people want. I’d truly appreciate your support!
