IRS to Seek Identities of U.S. Taxpayers Who Participated in the "Gig Economy"

I would support this if I thought the IRS was going to go after the companies that treat their employees as independent contractors, but that's not likely to happen for a while.

That seems... Pretty normal?

I mean, it falls within what the IRS has been legally tasked to do and know, the information request (demand?) has gone though the courts, and I don't see how "with a computer" makes it different than stuff that's been going on for a long time.

Spend tax payer money to squeeze pennies out of thousands instead of checking the pockets of the billionaires.

One factor is that Congress has been cutting the IRS budget and staff almost every single year for the last ~14 years. (Which looks even worse when you scale it by the increasing number of taxpaying entities.) So the agency can't "afford" to take many auditing-risks going after big fish.
