Datalist is a great hidden gem, and most websites with HTML forms would improve by replacing some inputs with datalists. Datalists are also great for making a simple and manually curated search field for small websites, although a little bit of JS is required. But nothing else.
The only common place where datalists do not work is when the user has an iPhone with Google Keyboard.
