- how much of US farm labor is performed by undocumented/illegal workers, in reality? - what stands between the situation today and some kind of mandatory legal-presence test before people get hired? (Eg is it really the cultural barrier of not having a national identity card, or it is the corps dont really want to verify, or that the system is easily gamed, or ?) - what is the legal standard for claiming asylum in US law? Eg do you need to be persecuted by a government, or can being on the wrong side of a gang be enough? - what prevents asylum seekers seeking asylum in countries en route, before the US, eg Panama or Mexico?
I expect that some very politically difficult and ugly conversations might need to be had, eg maybe a high percentage of asylum seekers are really economic migrants, or maybe they all are genuine claimants under US law in which case it might be cheaper to solve the issue some more structural way. But I dont know.
