Rails 8: It's more fun to be competent [video]

Love love love this. I recently saw something about Rails 8 (probably Kamal?) and decided to build a toy app using the main git branch parsing and displaying Telegram logs. I haven’t used Rails or done any front-end work since the traumatic 2->3 upgrade over a decade ago.

My two main takeaways were:

1) This is fun

2) Why do we put up with all this garbage in modern development

2a) Okay I guess Tailwind is more useful that I assumed

And it’s legitimately made me think I could build and launch something on my own, which I’ve never had the confidence to try before.

Love the talk - last night I was looking at the rails basic setup and thought how nice it was to just be able to view source. I absolutely agree with his ideas, and spotify being able to do 1m requests/s should stop any "but it does not scale" comment.

As someone that used to be a full stack developer and quietly moved to backend after being overflowed by the complexities of the modern web, I fully appreciate this path that rails is taking.

Mates, I’m fired up. I don’t know if DHH has evangelised me for so long or if it’s because we’re fairly aligned in our stances, but it feels like this ticks all my boxes. No more crazy expensive hosting, all can be understood by one person. It’s so much fun developing like this.

Very exciting features!
