US takes aim at Shein and Temu with new import rule proposal

They've actually driven me near completely off of Amazon. I normally don't even bother to look up products there anymore but rather go to a retailer I trust to have at least minimal supervision over their inventory.
I also have a German tool habit. I do not want to deal with US Customs every time I import another set of nice $80 tools to replace mine (which is usually because I've gifted them to someone else/hooked them on high quality stuff). I do not want US trade rules to make my life harder just because Temu is full of crap.
Is there not another way to hit back at these guys?
Of course China can tit-for-tat this move, but then again if they're about to enter a deflationary period then they might be importing fewer raw goods anyway. If they're about to be hit with severe sanctions for materially supporting Russia in the Ukraine invasion then they're absolutely going to be importing fewer US goods.

> The Biden administration said the proposal would help “protect consumers from goods that do not meet regulatory health and safety standards.”
This for your safety, of course.
Tariffs are taxes, and good taxes will promote things we want and decentivize things we don't want. I'm much more sympathetic to complaints about solar panel tarrifs than I am about tariffs on cheap purses and fidget spinners.
