I love and hate this feature, as it gives no progress or finished indicators.

Use the CLI. It prints the transfer speed and progress:

    /Applications/Tailscale.app/Contents/MacOS/Tailscale file cp /path/to/file my-device-name:

(The colon : at the end is not a typo.)
