Poliovirus that infected a Chinese child in 2014 may have leaked from a lab

There really should be a UN level inspection regime on the order of like nuclear non proliferation that sets standards and audits labs. If it does not exist already
The big problem was that China denied any site visit to WIV for almost a year, probably so that no evidence would exist. And then the WHO, probably under the CCP and Fauci’s direction, rejected Trump’s nominations for a representative for the US to visit WIV, and instead sent Peter Daszak. Basically the WHO sent the person who should have been under investigation for causing the pandemic.
We all had seen groups of people roaming to tear off the masks that other people were using and -assuring- the most wide spread possible. Has anybody questioned this people why? I can't see how Fauci would be guilty of that part, when people was doing exactly the opposite that he asked for.
Of course the official policy was the exact opposite; namely to flatten the curve to lower the load on healthcare.
It was always a thoroughly plausible argument that was needlessly politicized. SARS leaked from a lab in China twice in the early 2000s, and both times the PRC admitted it. [1]
That said, every country in the world has regular lab leaks, yes, including America. There's a Wikipedia page with some choice examples. [2]
There was a 2022 leak of Polio in the Netherlands that was only caught by wastewater monitoring. [3]

They can't really sign up for inspections of dangerous research when they are doing it themselves. Maybe things will change a bit post covid?
I doubt it. I firmly believe that one of the reasons that we've never had a serious investigation into the origins of Covid is that the trail would lead back to people and agencies in the US, which would be highly embarrassing.
We know it had a leak; workers from the lab got sick with COVID symptoms a month before the initial cluster of infections.
At least some of the people from the initial cluster had no link with the Wuhan market.
COVID has only been found in human samples from the market, not in animal samples.
Conveniently all databases and files regarding the research got deleted and lost.
Instead of it originating from the lab 1km away from the wuhan market, researching exactly this particular form of sars, we have to believe a bat from 3500 miles away ended up on the market, infected an unknown intermediate species, without any trace of animal being infected, immediately jumped to people and became increasingly more infectious.
I fail to see how this could ever be more likely.
Unfortunately, it is impossible politically to police this area of research. All that would happen is it would happen in more secretive government labs. The only reason we know about it happening is because the research was published.
Its not like this problem is exclusive to China. The anthrax in the ~2001 anthrax attacks was linked to a strain from US Biological weapons research[2]. Different circumstances, but lack of regulation and moderation in this industry is clearly a problem that has potentially world-destroying possibilities. Covid left a huge mark and had less than a 1% fatality rate.

Just because it's hard to police something, doesn't mean we legalize it. Murder is hard to solve, in some cases. Lab leaks cause way more harm than several murders. Electric chair for mass murder is a proper sentence
Please go to the CIA/DoD/FBI/(whatever the relevant chinese agencies are called) and tell them how to do their jobs so it will "never again" happen.
Only (at most) 28% of the countries in the world agree with this. [0]

Coming back from that is, in my opinion, the "politically" impossible bit.
Also related - the last polio survivor in an iron lung died earlier this year, likely due to his recent COVID-19 infection, sadly: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Alexander_(polio_survivor...
Great investigative journalism.
I can’t directly assert anything specific about the corona GOF lab leak(which seems to be the only hypothesis supported by any evidence) but I did unknowingly participate in an interesting and tragic anecdote in (December?) of that year.
I had been residing in the Dominican Republic at that time, and my father was doing poorly so I flew home to Alaska. When I got on the plane it was filled entirely with what appeared to be ethnic Chinese, with only a sparse few Dominicans on the flight.
During the flight I became curious and asked a fellow passenger in my row what the event was. He said that the people on the plane were on their way to conferences in the USA, and that the Chinese government had provided some kind of incentive to Wuhan businesses to “facilitate growth” by sending representatives to conferences in the USA, resulting in a sudden flood of conference goers.
Travel was evidently part of the incentive, and the man I was talking to was baffled as to why his travel reservations(and that of hundreds if not thousands of others) had routed them through the Dominican Republic. We both supposed that it was just because the flood of visitors must have filled all of the other routes. In retrospect I can imagine other explanations that are a bit more complex, but who knows.
Coincidence? Perhaps. But I can see the potential motivation for an industrial country that knows it is about to be brought to its knees by an epidemic to take measures to be sure that it isn’t singled out and isolated.
Once arriving, I soon became debilitatingly ill with what I assumed was the “Chinese flu”.
Unfortunately I passed Covid on to my father before I fell ill and to the family of my good friend while I was there during my recovery- a time which if it had been influenza I would no longer have been contagious.
By the time I got back to the Dominican Republic, the news of Covid was breaking. Within days of getting home, my father died, and my friend and his elderly mother were both dead within two weeks.
I feel like China made me complicit in the killing of my father and my friend and his mother. For my father, I was with him before i realised I was getting sick, for my friend I was “no longer sick, just tired”.
If we had known about the severity and scope of this in a more timely fashion from China, and if there weren’t planes full of Wuhan residents erupting into the USA (through sussy routes) perhaps at least my friend and his mother might have been spared.
Anyway, Covid really sucks and it makes me livid seeing idiots that think precautions are some kind of government plot to take their freedumns.
I suspect, after talking to the doctors during her treatment, that SARS-COV19 may have played a part in that as well. (perhaps through immunological stress?)
The doctors told me that the resurgence of cancer from cases that were years in remission (such as my wife’s) were rampant since SARS-COV19. The cancer institute where she got treatment had seen an uptick of over 20 percent in remission failures over just two years.
Anyway, life goes on, I’m doing better and working on productive projects with my family. I take a lot less for granted these days lol.
