Ask HN: Can I link to my vlog here on show HN or is that spam?

3 points_jogicodes_7 comments

I am Jogi, indie hacker making small webapps as I learn svelte kit and I am starting a vlog with monthly progress / journey updates on youtube.

I just had the idea of sharing the vlog here under `Show HN:` when it comes out in a couple of days but I do not want to spam this place if this sort of thing is frowned upon.

I read the rules but am unclear on them which is why I am asking this here, don't wanna ruin my karma lol, is that sort of thing cool to do or not?

Cheers Jogi

"Please don't use HN primarily for promotion. It's ok to post your own stuff part of the time, but the primary use of the site should be for curiosity." https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html So it might be OK as a normal post, but Show HN actually has its own rules. https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html

Yeah it is ambiguous but I am reading it more as not to do it. Thanks

I agree with the other comments, some general advice in case you want to post:

* What you want to post is probably not a "Show HN". Take a look at https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html

* After posting write a comment explaining you are the author and try to answer most of the questions.

* Try to be active in other threads about topics you know and can give some insightful information. Or make interesting genuine questions.

* In my opinion, a monthly update is usually boring. Try to make a blog post about one interesting problem you had during the month and how you solved it. (The monthly update may be helpful for the community following the project, but not for posting here.)

* Don't post too often. In my opinion, once a month is a good interval to find something interesting to say, and make a good blog/video about it. It can vary a lot.

I think maybe a single link would be okay, but nothing more than that.

I did the same. Made it to the first page with a link, had thousands of views over two days, which was amazing. But now links to the site are shadow banned, sadly.

Thanks. I think audience wise it makes sense to share on here, it is related/relevant. I just don't want to upset the owners of the place if they disagree with this, which was the reason for asking. I was made aware that there is a way to reach out to moderators, I will do that

1. Content you make should be a regular submission, not a Show HN. Show HN is only for things you made that people can play with or use.

2. HN discourages using HN solely or significantly for self promotion.

3. HN has paid moderators. You can ask them about your plans using the contact link in the footer of this page.

Good luck.

Thanks I was not aware of the moderator situation. This question was kinda for them so I will try to reach out, thank you
