Ask HN: What desktop apps are you working on?

I love the "What are you working on" threads here on HN. I noticed that web apps make up the majority of software projects people are working on.

This "Ask HN" is a little different, it's an opportunity to show off the desktop software projects you're working on.

So HN, what desktop apps are you developing? What tech are you using? What did you get right and what would you do differently?

Not actively working on, but last year I made a macOS app to track YouTube channels: https://github.com/agentcooper/telik, I use it everyday.

I also prototyped a macOS app to get a federated feed for multiple Telegram channels: https://github.com/agentcooper/aqueduct. Still wish someone would do it properly.

Hey! Thanks a lot for Telik. I installed it a year ago to keep a local list of the channels I follow since I didn’t want to self-host a full server-based YouTube solution or download all the videos. Sadly, some channels have been closed by their authors, but I was able to identify which ones because the initial list I imported into Telik was still querying them. Great project!

I work an app that lets me download and convert my plex music collection on my computer. I have a large collection that is mostly in flac. And I have a cheap mp3 player that I use for sports. However that mp3 player has only 8gb of storage, which is very little if filled with flac files. So with my app I can browse my music collection and select albums which then get downloaded and converted to mp3.

I often download Douyin Videos to make money on Youtube Short, but there is no App on Desktop. Instead, I use online websites, such as VidQuickly, I use it everyday.

It’s incredibly user-friendly, allowing you to download videos with no extension, no software install, and it’s 100% free & secure. You get high-quality downloads without watermarks, making it easier to edit and repurpose content for monetization. VidQuickly is a game-changer for anyone serious about leveraging Douyin content for profit.

I have built a macOS app to easily run slideshows - with a shuffle option built-in (it’s not easy to start such slideshow on macOS ;)). Ver 1.0 was released in Dec 2023, now I’m working on 1.19, and it turned out - people are using it!

I have been working on an open source MCAD application called cadseer. https://gitlab.com/blobfish/cadseer
