Ask HN: How risky is building unofficial APIs?

I am contemplating building an unofficial API for a website that I am not part of, pretty much like the unofficial HN API. It's a website that aggregates soccer news and shows the current games, today's games, tomorrow's, and so on. An API would be very handy. It is risky? If you built one yourself, what issues did you face?
