You came to the worst place. HN is like instagram but for tech people: here you won’t find pics of engineers having a nice coffee in Paris, enjoying a beer in a beach in Asia or people unpacking their latest gift.

But here you’ll find people telling how normal is to make over $250K/year, how incompetent are those who don’t release software properly (like those at CrowdStrike), and that doing a hundred leetcode problems is normal if you want to have a nice job (how you dare not to take job prep seriously!).

I’m trying to quit HN, but it’s hard. I don’t have instagram so I need to decompress somewhere.

To the original question: we all are mediocre.

You can always just laugh in your head at those absurd people on here. Plenty of useful and interesting stuff on here.

My favourite are the people who build raytracers as an alternative to Hello World.

I tried that and failed.

Like Homer said, “trying is the first step towards failure”.

To be fair, a writing a ray tracer forces one to learn more about a language than just Hello, World!

It's completely fair but I can't build a ray tracer with languages I've used over 10 years.

It's one of those things where if you've done it once you can repeat from memory for the most part. Personally I've never quite managed to get a ray tracer working properly. The math is too dense for me when bugs happen. I can fairly easily get a wireframe cube rendered and spinning though, took me months to figure out the first time but once you know the path it's easy enough.

You forgot to mention the absurd '<fad diet X> is the solution to every medical issue everywhere' and strange anti-pharma conspiracy theories.

Reddit is so much worse.

If you're legitimately a senior engineer in the United States with many years of relevant experience, $250k is the floor for what you should accept.

Exhibit number one :)

You must understand that:

- not all people here are from the US

- not all people here specify that they are in the US when comment on their salary

- not all people here knows most of the people here are from the US

I'm in the USA with many years of relevant software experience.

What I'm not is a resident of the Bay Area, Seattle, or NYC.

I know many senior engineer peers who earn nowhere near 250k. Not sure where your statement is coming from.
