Dr. Ruth Westheimer, America's pioneering sex therapist, dies at 96

I don't want to downplay how remarkable of a person she was, but I think it's worth keeping in mind that this was very much a reflection of the time (ca. mid-1940s). Many Jews who were not classic "military types" (academics, engineers, businessmen, artists, etc.) were radicalized by the Holocaust into emigrating to Mandatory Palestine and joining Zionist militias, because there was a widespread and freshly palpable fear that the world at large scarcely had any interest in allowing Jews to exist, let alone thrive.

The actual process and legacy of this is complicated, to say the least. But I don't think one can accuse Dr. Ruth herself of coming by it dishonestly. Her family had her smuggled from Germany to Switzerland so that she might escape what eventually became the Holocaust, and she never saw them again because the Nazis killed them (her father in Auschwitz; the rest "disappeared").
