<sigh/>

Yet another reason for caring & competent people to cross off "teacher" as a possible career option. And for social media bans for under-16's to be passed. And doubtless further fallout.

You’ll never fix children coming from unparented or poorly parented homes where this behavior is tolerated or looked upon apathetically (there are no levers or mechanisms to do this); you’re only able to help teachers by pulling them out of the profession and its abuse (or helping them avoid the profession entirely in the first place).

Looking back it felt like being in one of those chimpanzee documentaries

As a student, or as a teacher? If the latter - how long did you last?

This occurred in a prosperous suburb of Philadelphia. I doubt the district is low on the unparented. Poorly parented would require a definition and more information.

I would caution against assuming that wealth equates to effective parenting. Poor parenting, in this case, is a failure to transfer and instill the concepts of compassion, respect, and empathy to children from adults.
