Second Canadian scientist alleges brain illness investigation was shut down

The number one reason for shutting down an investigation is when the government already knows the answer, but has no acceptable solution to it. In this case, possible reasons include: (1) prions, with a possible spread into the soil and plants (2) neurotoxins like BMAA etc. from seafood (3) brain eating amoeba.

If it's #1, "god help NB" because short of incinerating the whole region with a hydrogen bomb, there is not much else that can be done.

If it's #2, neurotoxins from seafood, stopping them will decimate the local seafood industry, ergo taxes and exports, so the government has a lot to lose by taking action.

If it's #3, the government would still be on the hook for inadequate water purification.

This article has so few details in so many words. A committee decided 40 people wasn't enough to call it an epidemic, but there is no information to suggest that malice is involved. Have they declared epidemics for smaller clusters? Then there are claims of the number being 350. Is _that_ a lot? Over what time period were the 350 or even the 40 identified?
