Sequoia is both more and less generous to Intel Macs, depending on the model

It'll be interesting to see a decade from now if the bounce back after the most recent architecture switch was immediate or if it happens over a few years. For the PPC to Intel transition, the first few Intel models were held back by only having 32-bit processors, or 64-bit processors but only 32-bit firmware. Will the M1 get 8+ years of updates, or will it have an early retirement relative to M2 and M3, or will it be all the models with only 8GB of RAM that get an early retirement?
That's an awfully short support window, I bet these computers still work well enough for daily usage. Thankfully, for the intel line there's always the option to install Linux (I suppose).
So much ewaste for a company that touts to be environmentally friendly.
My iPad 2 had a weird short support cycle and the thing that killed it was a new version of iOS, it’s so slow you can barely open any app.
Time to look for cheap models on tech sites ?
Nice that both Apple and Microsoft (TPM2) is helping those of us who like to by cheap. 10 year old hardware is still very usable these days.
My parents rely on an Apple laptop that’s now ten years old. They would very happily pay to keep it ticking over especially to avoid the massive capital cost of a hardware upgrade. There must be many others in this position but I have no idea of “financially prudent, retired Apple laptop owner” is a market worth going after or not in comparison to how much it would cost to build a team of experts capable of supporting someone Apple’s software.
That might get you another 2 years if they pull the plug after Sequoia, it might get you another 3-4 if they keep supporting the 2023 Intel Macs that were sold.
After that, if the machines are still viable, I would think your best options are Windows or Linux anyway? (It’s hard to see where a custom OS fits in).
I don’t know if $759 counts as “massive” but you can get a refurbished M1 MacBook Air (warranty + AppleCare eligible) from Apple: https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/mac
The cost per hour, that’s what I’d like to see.
And the worst thing is Safari updates are tied to OS. If you don't have last three version of OS. You don't get Safari update.
