The Most Ramified Chess Position of 2023

FTA: “People have composed artificial positions with a huge number of legal moves. The most ramified artificial position I have found has 218 legal moves. But it’s hard to imagine how such a position could come about in a real game, which is what I’m interested in. So I churned through all of the positions in all of the Lichess games which took place in 2023 in search of the most ramified chess position”

And then, they only present examples from ‘real’ games that look like artificial compositions. For example one where black, having four queens against a lone king gets two more queens before checkmating white, or one checkmate position has 8 rooks along a diagonal of the board, again against a lone king.

If they want to talk about real games, they’ll need to find a way to filter out those.
