I always wondered why people would buy Diesel based cars... my friend's dad bought a Volkswagen Rabbit back in the 1980s, and it seemed reliable enough. To get around gelling of fuel in cold weather, his dad cut it with gasoline, and had no problems. It was not a fast car, to be sure.
Thanks for giving the missing backstory to DieselGate.
Diesel used to be cheaper. I had a car with a 1.1 litre diesel engine and I would get 60mpg (uk gallons).
Now electricity is much cheaper, around a quarter of the price as long as you can charge at home.
