Ask HN: Where the heck are the junior Full stack positions

My cousin-in-law is having a real hard time finding anything available. I chalk it up to them not being the best at selling themselves, but while also looking alongside for them, it seems the market is actually terrible for juniors.

What bothers me is, technically he's a junior, but practically he is a "passionate" who could learn anything you throw at him in a weekend.

As an experienced programmer of 10+ years it hurts my heart to see a "passionate" having a hard time. Truly passionate, natural programmers are not common.

My daughter is having the same issue. She has almost 2 years experience and is very good at selling herself. But she is being pushed back for either not having enough experience to hit their requeiment, often 2 years or she gets to the final round but is usurped by people with ‘way more’ experience. She has been a manager is her previous career and comes with other really useful skills. There are very very few pure ‘grad’ positions out there and those that are asking for say 2 years experience min are being flooded with applications from people with a lot more than w years. Agree with the other poster that this will bit the industry later but I’m more worried about now for her. There just simply aren’t enough roles out there for whatever reason.

I've been thinking about the potential impact of AI on the job market, particularly in the tech industry. There's a growing narrative that AI can handle the tasks typically assigned to junior or entry-level developers. As a result, we're seeing some developers become significantly more productive with the aid of AI, which might reduce the overall need for hiring new devs.

If this continues, we could / will face a shortage of senior devs in the future. As the current senior devs retire or move on, there might not be enough experienced devs to fill their roles because the initial demand for junior devs has decreased. This potential gap could have significant implications for the industry. What happens then?
