I was really hoping that the build to order trend would combat this. Dealerships aren't going to have a purple car on their lot for obvious reasons. But why doesn't Tesla let you order a purple car?

Yes, it complicates Tesla's logistics, but there are people that want purple cars and that's a market opportunity for Tesla and other BTO manufacturers.

In China, Tesla actually lets you fully wrap your car when ordering and it comes pre-installed.

I really want to see something like that come to the US, as it means you could have the bland color underneath to preserve the resale value argument, while having the color you want.

Costs extra to get anything besides shades of black and white in most cases too
