Ask HN: Seeking Advice – Navigating Career and Financial Challenges in Tech
I'm a software developer with two years of experience, currently working in a startup where I've spent the last year. My background includes roles in data engineering and backend development. I'm passionate about software development and am constantly seeking to improve by exploring blogs, books, and GitHub repositories.
However, I'm facing a dilemma. Over the past six months, despite being a top performer and receiving bonuses, my salary has not met my expectations. With high inflation impacting my country, my financial situation has forced me to make significant changes, including moving back closer to my family due to rising living costs.
I've attempted to discuss my salary concerns with my employer, but these conversations haven't led to the changes I hoped for. This situation has demotivated me, and I find myself more focused on job hunting and understanding market requirements than on my current job.
I'm seeking advice on a few points:
- How should I approach the conversation about salary adjustments under these circumstances?
- Is there a trend where staying in the same job can result in lower salary increases compared to switching companies?
- Any general advice on balancing financial needs with career growth in the tech industry?
Thank you for your insights!
