It seems like these LLMs are 1) extremely expensive to develop, and 2) extremely difficult to actually monetize. No one but Nvidia actually seems to be making money.

no that is not true -- there is quite a lot of money changing hands, and has been for several years. Much of that research content is "sensitive" and closely guarded. Public news tends to just talk about splashy generative, media-oriented items.

This LLM competition is great for consumers. It's been awhile since there's been this pace of innovation.

They're in the first phase of enshittification. Offering everything for free or cheap to gather marketshare and get us hooked on the product. This is when things seem wonderful for the consumer. A win-win. Amazing how the lord, our free market, provides!

Don't worry, once they're established and the lines between the competition have been drawn we'll be milked to pay it all back five fold. We'll be coughing up expensive subscriptions and ads and pay with our data, while quality decreases to cut costs. Thanks for booking that flight with your certified (TM) partner airline, ChatGPT. This soundbite really needs to disappear, it's catchy but mostly incorrect and unfortunately sets a wrong impression.

You can pay and still be the product. It can be free and you aren't necessarily a product of any kind. Examples aren't hard to find.

Could be shortened to, "You are the product." There's no commodity quite as valuable as human time and attention.

Only if the human has money to spend or excess time to provide labour. Across western societies, it would appear most people are stressed to their financial limits (I would expect significantly declining marginal revenue from further advertising as the consumer discretionary wallet is fixed or shrinking) and stressed to their time limits with little free time.

Can you name an example for an service that is free without using the user data to generate revenue?
