Google is becoming a parody of itself at this point, they just introduced a "web" view which is supposed to resemble the classic results pages, but then they buried the option where hardly anyone will ever see it, and of course there's no way to make it the default.

They must be so paranoid about OpenAI or whoever releasing some new AI search engine that they are rushing all these mediocre AI features. Ironically it will probably the reason Google search starts to lose out because they're making it worse.

They've been making search worse for years now and still have their dominant position.

But we’ve all seen this play out several times across products in tech, they’re all popular until they aren’t. Netscape to Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer to Firefox, MySpace to Facebook.

There tends to be lag but once a real alternative appears and becomes more accessible people will leave.

As much as these corporate monopolies want to believe otherwise, consumers aren’t loyal when there is no competition.

And they pay dearly for it.

Google is trying to find the minimal amount of effectiveness and maximum amount of ads they can show before people start changing them from the default search in safari and chrom

Don't forget they intentionally move their UI around to trick users into clicking into something unwanted. https://i.sstatic.net/MwWWJ.gif

Oh yeah, that bar in my screenshot is "context sensitive" too so it's constantly messing up your muscle memory as the options are in different places every time. I say "context sensitive" because the ordering seems to be more or less random in practice.

Yes Google, "maps" of rustlang are more relevant than "web" or "books" of rustlang. Round of applause.

They also changed the News Feed on Android phones so that clicking on the story takes you to a search results page instead of the actual link.
