It's doing an extra-long format that not many people do, there's lots of research, lots of enthusiasm, narratives of some plucky underdog taking over the freaking planet, a mixture of business and history, and it's just executed well. Also a decent chunk of obligatory and shameless shilling.
Never struck me as something "the smartest people in the room" would listen to. More seems like it would appeal to the aspirational and/or nerdy set, the crossover with the Hacker News audience has to be huge.
Given this is the Wall Street Journal, the author either really likes Wall Street and Silicon Valley, or writing the press article equivalent of a handjob is just what pays the bills.
It's not much more than pump priming for the topics on offer, but that lends itself to driving, as one doesn't want to get too enmeshed.
But they find the fun in dry material.
