Mysterious iron pillar in India hasn't rusted for over 1,600 years

Wrought iron is what you have when you lack the technology to make steel. It's almost pure iron with minimal impurities and low carbon.

In the shape of this pillar, water wouldn't linger long and therefore minimal rusting.
