Normally the Hacker News thread has higher quality posts than Reddit but I thought this reddit thread has good comments including from someone on the Immich team

https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1chmz2p/the_imm...

> Pay the core team to work on Immich full-time Let us keep full autonomy about the project’s direction and leadership Continue to license Immich under AGPL Keep Immich’s development direction with no paywalled features Keep Immich “built for the people” (no ads, data mining/selling, or alternative motives) Provide us with financial, technical, legal, and administrative support

These are tall promises so lets hope they keep their word

From the article it appears that there will be an optional "pay-whatever" feature soon.

Who funds FUTO?

Yeah, that's a good question.. If it was philantrophy, wouldn't the one funding it want at least some publicity? When I see companies that are "magically funded" like this there's always one thing that comes to my mind - a nation state.

A nation state funding an AGPL code base is honestly awesome ;)

Anyway there are billionaires that have more money than entire nation states.

Eron Wolf.

From https://futo.org/what-is-futo/

> The time has come for a new organization wholly dedicated to solving this problem and giving people back control over their technology. That organization is FUTO, founded in 2021 by 18-year Silicon Valley veteran, programmer/founder of Yahoo! Games, and WhatsApp seed investor Eron Wolf.

Louis Rossmann is involved with FUTO and interviewed him here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJqoAPGSmfc

What does FUTO gain from this I wonder.

> They build software alternatives that focus on giving control to users. From their mission statement:

> “Computers should belong to you, the people. We develop and fund technology to give them back.”

Well it's something that aligns with them. Assuming FUTO aren't VC-backed, then, perhaps they can really work on that mission?
