America Lost the Plot with TikTok

There is ample history of banning foreign influence media, TikTok is another post on this road. While we want to be careful about not subverting our values (like free speech), it would be ameture hour to allow unfettered influence apps from countries whose stated goal is to undermine our way of life.
I would counter that the media has lost the plot with TikTok, but I expect them to optimize for clicks over context and understanding.
There has been an implicit agreement between the people & gov't, which allows the limitation of civil liberties in exchange for rapid progress in modernization and elimination of poverty. As that effort runs out of steam, and the economic system becomes stressed, the agreement begins to break down. One may also note how Jack Ma was reigned in as another thread of the agreement being changed unilaterally by the gov't.
Has nothing to do with democracy. Taiwan could be a monarchy or communist and nothing changes. It's about national territorial integrity.
> When the people of China compare their lives with those of other nations, they see democracies having something they want and cannot have.
Chinese people envy democracies like ukraine? Or russia? You think the chinese want to be like the philippines? Most of the world's poorest and underdeveloped countries are democracies. I highly doubt that's what the chinese aspire to.

Jack Ma? You watch too many silly youtube videos.
No it is not. Taiwan is their own territory and has every right to self determination. They look at what happened in Hong Kong and want nothing to do with that. See the results of the most recent election as evidence

What about South Korea, Japan, many EU nations, and the United States?
Russia is not a democracy, Ukraine is fighting for their right to self-determination. Taiwan will as well.

Not true, they are mostly authoritarian pseudo democracies (in name only). Most are in Africa

Are you aware of the ongoing cyber attacks from China on US infrastructure? The power and reach of the Chinese super-surveillance network? The long-standing genocide of the Uyghurs? You think China would be willing to do all that to maintain the stability of the regime and its international sphere of influence and somehow just draw the line at surveillance via TikTok?
If you truly think that then that’s fine but I just wanted to double check that I was hearing you right.
