I can't work out even what they're trying to accomplish here or why they're trying to accomplish it. Is this really just a case of congress being incredibly stupid (as congress is wont to do?). Are they trying to say that American's personal data can't leave American shores? Do they somehow seem to think that an American owner would be more "responsible" with TikTok than a Chinese owner?
Yes.
Yup. It's not because of the personal security risk, it's because of the national security risk (whether you think that risk is a big deal or not depends on your personal opinions, but I guess the folks in DC think it's important).
What I don't get is how this could possibly pass constitutional muster. If this ban is permissible, what's to stop any speech platform from being banned on security grounds?
