I was at one of SGI's competitors and we had teams doing cheap HW - ATi and other cards, like IBM's GPUs at the time - and yet the company as a whole was like "ALL GOOD LET'S KEEP BUILDING MASSIVE CUSTOM GRAPHICS SYSTEMS!"

They were as dead as SGI in the same timeframe.
