Ask HN: Is patenting lines of code the same as restricting free thought?

Since i'm a programmer, I can dream up lines of code here on the other side of the world, that someone simultaneously thought up in the USA.

This would mean that I would have to have knowledge of all the other code and patents out there in the world to prevent myself from writing it exactly like someone else. How in the earth would this have to work?
