Marketing fast food to children and developing “brand loyalty” in minors was heavily cracked down on in the early 2000’s to tackle rising child obesity and diabetes rates which forced fast food companies like McDonalds to change their child-centric marketing model since they were legally not allowed to do that anymore. It wasn’t a lightbulb moment for McDonald’s, they would have happily continued doing it had the regulations not stopped them.
