The only thing that's keeping it there is atrocious search discovery of communities that exist in its long tail of interests - Reddit's the only place to go. Everyone has a long tail interest, OpenID's too hard(!), Facebook owns the offline 'you' with the core like a core of Mastodon - dedicated to their identity on that network.
The AI's a flash in the pan. Reddit can't saturate interests any further and the focus is no longer making the long tail feel welcome.
