There's another reason, too. It's not at all rare for a position to have multiple applicants that are all pretty much equally good, and yet only one will get the job.

What can you honestly say to the others that doesn't sound like BS? In that sort of situation, the honest answer for why one person got the job and not the others is that one person just got lucky.
