The One Idea That Could Save American Democracy

You know, when people can go without taking a day off from work?
Like any other democracy?
There's not "one idea" to "save american democracy", american democracy is in disarray for a multitude of reasons and you need a lot of systemic changes some of which should probably take decades of transition to eventually arrive to something that we could hold as a great democratic ideal. Not to mention the efforts needed to be put in improving civil-education within the society.
But, then the article begins by putting Trump "and his allies" in a kind of "the evil that needs to be defeated" position. One might not like Trump, but he was the President of the United States; he was voted in by people, by the system and for a reason. He is not a "one-off" phenomenon but one that actually shares similarities with other leaders through out the entire world; a lot of them with different political systems. So obviously this is something that runs much deeper.
In any case, the idea in question is "solidarity". Basically turn America into a european-style social democracy. Well, guess what, social democracies in Europe are also going through a crisis so this idea, while improving american lives greatly and one I completely support, is not going to "save american democracy".
This is satire, right?
