The loss of sandlot baseball in the US is more about the rise of basketball, football, and soccer, than helicopter parents. Lots and lots of kids play unsupervised basketball or soccer, or variations on flag football. All of those have simpler and more engaging scoring and participatory dynamics for kids than baseball variations.

I wouldn't actually deny that, but there are kids who still play baseball. It's just always with grownups supervising.

simpler and more engaging? deciding who fouled whom in basketball or soccer is simple? The offsides rule in soccer?
