Are there workloads bottlenecked only by single-threaded perf per watt, where having multiple cores awake in the same box would be antithetical to the point? Some kind of scale-out HFT liquidity strategy, perhaps?
Minecraft servers are single threaded. For hosting one of those you want a purpose hoster which will usually have Intel boxes.
I comparison-shop dedicated hosting services a lot, and I've often wondered why a "Minecraft server" is advertised as its own thing, separate from a regular machine. I had always assumed it was just an SEO thing. TIL.
Tell me more about these heroics. Their water-cooled setup still maxed out, interested in more aggressive options.
Things that are not liquids at 1 atm of pressure. Liquid helium, liquid nitrogen, etc.
You can remove the heat spreader, AKA delidding the CPU. It's a significant bottleneck in cooling modern, power-dense CPUs like this, if you're relying on a fluid at ambient temperature.
Yep, the venerable de8auer channel has confirmed this does allow the P-cores to run 6GHz continuously at ~75C:
Closed loop helium gas cooling system = lots of gigahertz
For the real heroics we'd need cooperation from the manufacturer. Such as using monoisotopic diamond as substrate or putting some channels for liquid helium into the chip.
You can run a water chiller, but managing condensation gets tricky.
