Any person really interested of the cost for the society would have tried to calculate the ecological "opportunity cost" and used counterfactual scenarios try to figure figure out if the cost of computation and the cloud actually decrease ecological burden.

Imagine though what all those gaming monkeys would do to the environment if they ran around wanting real swords and horses.
