The track log shows a gap in the data around the time the incident occurred. Is it typical for gaps to exist in that route (out of range for any ADS-B receiver) ?

In ADS-B the location is determined by the airplane and is periodically broadcast. A gap in data could/would mean a gap in broadcast or positioning.

It is common for flights to have gaps in live data for portions of Aus<->NZ flights over the Tasman sea, yes.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that wondered and looked it up, so I'll share it here: Yes, it was a Boeing. A 787, to be exact.

I'm wondering if we'll reach a point where every 787 and 737 MAX will need to be recalled, completely disassembled, and reassembled with normal quality-control and inspections in place.

We're well past the point where it would have made sense to do it right in the first place. However, we're still well ahead of Soviet aviation quality standards.

And Latam has a huge fleet of Airbus! It is worrying to see so many incidents with Boeing.
