(Yes, I know, it's the White House Office of the National Cyber Director, not Joe Biden. Still, if you're a developer, and you are developing in C/C++ because reasons, and this announcement comes out, is that actually going to change either your mind or your reasons?)
Translation:-
Someone who works in the White House told officials that his son is learning Rust and that it is better than any other programming language. So the officials repeat the message to the public.
White House says they are "open to suggestions" on what the best "safe" programming language to use moving forward.
(Basically, if they are pushing on "safety" it is obvious people on the inside are pushing for Rust)
I'm hoping this was sarcasm.
This recommendation was in the form of a report by the Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) in the White House. I would suspect it had more thought to it than you're suggesting.
I think this quote from the article is quite useful: "Recent studies from Microsoft and Google have found that about 70 percent of all security vulnerabilities are caused by memory safety issues." Which the article cites [1] [2]
There is validity to their argument on the source of security vulnerabilities.
