In 1940, with <10% of the US having had "some college", "which college" was perhaps not so meaningful; in 2020, with >50%, the question is much more important. (Because of the hyperlocal nature of US primary education, even at the elementary level "which district" can be —in terms of parents' revealed preferences— very important in objectively measurable dollar terms)
