dm-vdo is Permabit's block-level deduplication technology which Redhat acquired a few years ago. It took a long time to clean the code up and get it ready for upstream inclusion, so this is a great step forward.
dm-vdo's main advantage is that it can dedup up to 10Tb of data per 1Gb of RAM (@4kb dedup block size).
