Another part of the aetiology may be that the objective, qualitative, difference between "eccentric" and "crazy" boils down to "is it causing undeniable problems in your life?"
People ascribe many contradictory things to money: being barred from Heaven on one side, as outer evidence of inner goodness on the other, etc. etc. What I think most people will agree upon is that having money turns many things that would be problems for people without into (at worst) mere annoyances, and (at best) other peoples' problems.
For all I know, it never occurred to Howard Hughes, while he was living in a movie screening room for four months and recycling milk bottles to serve his daily physiological needs, that this behaviour may have been a problem?
