After death, you're aware that you've died

I am dubious of NDE studies because a couple of things:

Are a large number of these experiences reported by people who were in a hospital context where through the resuscitation process they were given multiple different drugs that impact on their brain chemistry/perception etc?

I’d be interested in how NDE differ between people in a clinical setting and people who died in a non-clinical setting and were somehow revived by significant luck (as in a bystander was able to revive them with CPR and (maybe) an AED alone…

And the other thing often reported in NDE is this awareness of what’s going on. Which sounds similar to what people describe when they have anaesthetic awareness. Which would make sense if you have arrested in a hospital context, as you may not have been given drugs that alter consciousness like, propofol, Sevoflurane, Midazolam etc.. but still been given drugs for resus like muscle relaxants that mean you’re paralysed (for intubation) and adrenaline to try and get some circulation, but actually your consciousness isn’t altered.

I guess my point is, how much is the reported NDE down to the concoction of drugs given to resuscitate someone.

The other thing I’m dubious about is how NDE are reported, and does this then become a situation where people report what they have heard other people have had as an experience?

It’s not exactly related, but I find an uncanny number of people believe they were asked to count back from 10 as they were being anaesthetised - however, I’ve never asked, or seen someone be asked to count back from 10 as they go off to sleep. But this is something people talk about happening, that is sometimes represented in media (TV shows, movies, books) - so perhaps they believe that’s the experience they will have, and so they remember it as such, even if it never happened. The human memory isn’t exactly reliable). I just wonder, how much of NDE is not really an experience someone had (ie, the experience of a tunnel with light at the end of it), but rather just a belief that it is an experience they had.

NDE is certainly a fascinating topic, though I’m not sure the way it is studied yields anything more than just interesting insights into cultural beliefs of what dying feels like.
