Wrote about this 4 years ago in Digital Vegan, that Big Tech would eventually face a recruitment crisis. This has nothing to do with economic slowdown, it's to do with ethics. The reputation of Big Tech is dirt now.

People no longer want to be part of things they see as making the world a worse place. Sadly it also affects things like policing and intelligence work, so we get a vicious cycle of good people who could make a difference being discouraged from entering fields where human judgement is vital, and so more of those roles are filled by algorithms. At some point we will have to step back from abusive technologies and realise that humans will not so willingly collude in their own alienation.

Question for downvoters: if technology is getting a PR problem what are we going to do about it other than trying to silence anyone who says it?

No, the story covers the lack of perks and then layoffs, not really about the desire to do non evil work, the example guy Michael now works in big finance, which isn't any less evil, just an older evil

That's what the BBC story says. But I'm arguing that their analysis is wrong and simplistic. Discuss.

Based on our long history, including colonization, people will do just about anything for money. Morals are nice, but have no value if you're starving, or have something to gain.

But we're not starving. I hope you're not. I'm not. We're living in great times. So we have the luxury of not behaving like animals towards each other, right? So I'm saying we can do much more to demand ethics of work-life, now we're not reduced to base necessity and penury?
